Jon Fernans is excited and inspired every day to create challenging and expressive works in stone. The themes of Jon’s work range from the natural world to the spiritual, in stones of turquoise, alabaster, honeycomb calcite, wonder stone, granite and marble. His work has been successfully shown and sold throughout the East Coast of the US, with the demand rising every year.
Jon was born and raised in South Florida. His father was originally from British Guiana, his mother from Barry, Wales. After a childhood spent on the beach and in the ocean, Jon enlisted in the US Army. Upon his completion of service, Jon created a process for silkscreening on leather which grew into a thriving business, which he sold to enroll at the Indiana University in order to study music.
After his professor retired, Jon left college to pursue a career in music, embarking on a 25 year journey around the world as a singer/songwriter. He still performs at local festivals and in clubs where you can enjoy his original songs and unique style of fingerpicking on his nylon string guitar.
Jon’s days on the road were numbered upon meeting his future wife, Ruth Hartman, an artist who creates one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces. This happy union led to a marriage and a second career for Jon as a sculptor. He began taking classes with acclaimed Florida artist Terry Thomas and found a love of carving stone as compelling as creating music.
Jon spends his summers in Maine and winters in Florida.
